Highway 99A was a transportation route within the Greater Vancouver
area, and began in Surrey off the first exit from Peace Arch. The stretch of
Highway 99A through Surrey was originally to be named the Peace Arch
Highway, but was renamed King George VI Highway after the Royal
visit of 1939 and dedicated officially to the Royal family on October 16, 1940.
The highway serves as a route for commuters travelling from New Westminster,
Coquitlam, Burnaby, and Vancouver.
Oak tree seedlings from Great Windsor Park in England were sent to
members of the Commonwealth throughout the world to commemorate the coronation
of King George VI that took place in 1937. Most of the surviving trees are
located along the King George Highway between the Nicomekl River and the
Highway 99 junction at 8 Avenue.
